About Us

The journey started 11 years ago with a conversation with some darts players from a local team. We were talking about Marc Birch, Jaime Wastells Pap and a few other people who served in the forces. Soon after it went on to the subject that there was no real darts competition in the area, so we decided to put on a small competition as a one off and said if we raise money from a raffle or football card we'll donate it to Help for Heroes and get the Birch family involved. We had a brainstorm over a few drinks and came up with the name 'Darts for Heroes'.
After the first
competition we raised around £2,000 that year and then someone said that they look forward to the following year.

After a first successful year, the amazing people you see in the photo (above) got involved, the word spread and we grew bigger from there, many years on and we are still going strong.

Corporal. Marc Birch

Some friends of ours knew the Birch family and introduced us, so we asked them if they would like to get involved as Marc had died the year before.

Marc John Birch also known as 'Birchy', was a Corporal serving in the Royal Navy at base 45 Commando. He died whilst he was deployed on operations with X-Ray Company 45 Commando Group, Royal Marines in Afghanistan. Corporal Birch was killed by a suspected enemy suicide bomber.

Jaime's Pap

Jaime's Pap joined the Royal Navy just after the Second World War began. He did his Able Seaman training then he trained to be a Torpedo Operator, witnessed the sinking of HMS Hood and the pursuit and sinking of the Bismarck, the Arctic Convoys and was with PQ17.

He went on to HMS Venues and where they were the support role at Juno beach on D-Day; after that they went to Burma and then near the end of the war they went after and sank the Hagaro which was one of the last major see battles of the war.

He passed away in 2015 just after his 98th birthday.
